My family of 5

Friday, August 31, 2007

I realized yesterday how strange it must look when someone sees me with all my kids. I get stares, often people ask me, "they aren't ALL yours are they?" I have strangers constantly asking me, "how old are YOU?" I swear this happened last year when A was just a tiny baby, I took the kids out for ice cream and this lady asked me the are they all yours question then said, you have to tell me how old you are, at that time i was 27. Then people are even more shocked when they hear I work, I suppose they typically assume I am most likely single, and having kids for a bigger cheque. :( I had this friend that would mention to her friend about me and quickly say, but she's a nurse and so is her husband. It's kind of awful that she felt the need to defend me quickly. Even when I was with my mother yesterday, at the mall, the lady at the checkout was commenting on how cute A was and then was surprised they were mine, the usual, blah blah then she said, I suppose you don't work, and I was like uummmm, yah full time, I have vacation time.

Even at work, when patients or family members see I'm pregnant they'll say, "your first?" then I laugh hysterically and say, no, guess again, and keep saying no until they guess #5. I often get told I look like I'm about 20 yrs old, certainly not old enough looking to have 4, almost 5 children.

Does this happen to anyone else??

sorta...when people come to the door trying to sell something, etc., they ask to speak to my parents...and same thing on the telephone!
but ever since TP, I think I've aged...

Hey! Found you. You are most certainly getting one of my (not really) homemade care packages. You stopped by, you commented & you get stuff. And, since you are pg, I can totally take care of you, momma! Send me a email at anglophilefootballfanatic at (apparently you do it this way? I'm so new to this!) gmail dot com.

I, too, get looks. Partially because my wedding ring broke (stupid platinum looks great, breaks way too often) & I wasn't wearing one for several months while it was getting fixed. Of course, since I'm 5 ft. 3 and still get carded...ask me sometime about Dave & Busters...I was obviously the high school drop out with small child. Great for you for having the big family!

OK, so I'm gonna need a rundown. How old are all your kids? Mind doing a post with a little summary of each kid?

Ugh - I guess this is something I'll have to get used to! I already get tons of opinions and personal questions, and I haven't even given birth yet!
When I'm at work, people usually ask the same thing: "Your first?" To which I always politely respond, yes. But I'm already 26. It's not like it would be out of this world for me to have a couple more. People ask questions so they can categorize you.

I don't usually leave the house without M by my side, but together we still look awfully young. We get dirty looks often, walking around with a toddler and very pregnant me. It's funniest when we go grocery shopping, since we're probably the only ones there NOT paying for our milk with federal money.

I look young too, compounded by the fact that I often dress kinda slobby and don't do anything with my hair, I know I generally look around 20. (Im 27 too). I hate that. Because I know people think the same thing of me- must be a single unwed mom- but I'm not! Ah!

It hasn't happened to me, but it did happen to a friend of mine. She had 3 boys, and they she got pregnant with twins. When she went in for one of her ultrasounds one of the ladies in the waiting room said something like "oh how exciting, are these your first children??" And she said "nope, 4th and 5th." Apparently at that point the whole waiting room got deathly quiet. I think it's great you have a big family!

We only have two children, so we don't get that comment ... but I am *always* hearing the, "Boy, you sure have your hands full!" remark. UGH!!! I *hate* it! I always respond with something like, "Yes, but it's fun!" (which is true). And people just freak out when we tell them that our children are 19 months apart. I get that pat on the back and, "Good for you." LOL! :)

Not half as much as the looks I get when walking with hubby, he's 6ft 5inch and I am 5ft 2..
Also 10 years between us!
but you get used to it and can have a laugh, well I do anyway!
Have a good one,
Hugs from Lesley

hehe, no, unfortunately not... I am nearly 27 and pregnant with my first and my husband is 32. When people find out our ages, I am nearly green with jealousy about how they thought HE was such younger! Presumably, they also thouhgt I was older. Ggggrrr! :)

It did used to work well when I was under age and sneaking into night clubs, but now, not so fun!

Well, no. That doesn't happen to me. Ever. I'm 35, and I've only got two (little) kids!!!!

But seriously I have no idea how on earth you work FULL TIME!!!!! Kudos to you!

Hey there! Saw on Facebook just now that you're not feeling well. I hope that you get better very soon! Hope it's nothing serious.

Ha! I wish!! At least about the looking twenty part. I think I might have been told once or twice that I don't look old enough to have a baby...which is crazy since you don't have to be very old to have one...and since I only have ONE I guess it's not really that unbelievable for me.

Totally..both my husband and I look really young! Hence, "theyoungbostons". I sometimes visit the youth from my church for lunch at their schools. When I'm pregnant I usually get the pitty looks from students like I'm some kind of after school special. I've been asked for my hall pass! It used to annoy me, but now I take it as a compliment and cherish those moments when I feel like everyone will notice my "mom pants" and my neglected eyebrows.

I could have written that exact post...... 27 with 5 kids - 10, 9, 8, 7 & 1! I am so happy you are joining the club! Wait .... are we the only ones in this club?

I'm 27 right now, 38 weeks pg with my 4th (mine are 6, 3 ,18 mos). The looks are horrid. I have a full time job a BA in psychology, and have been married for 6 years! And why is it total strangers feel compelled to ask rude questions?
